Pittsburgh Riverhounds Head Coach Gene Klien to be on RSW.

Gene Klein Riverhounds
I wanted to get the news out early that Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ head coach Gene Klein will be my guest Tuesday night. Anyone who plays or is involved with soccer should be interested. Besides being the coach Gene is also the General Manager and I believe a partial owner of the team. There are a lot of angles to discuss, and it will be very intriguing to everyone. So not only will we be talking about on the field stuff, we’ll look at aspects of running a team, and player acquisition.

How Pittsburgh can have an MLS Team

Whether you even care about the MLS, or know who the RiverHounds are is almost irrelevant with this article. Even through this case is focused on this team and it’s situation, the overall ideas of more active fan involvement could be coming soon to major sports within a decade. The idea of fans having a say in drafts, team moves, PR, and stadium issues, has become more easy to facilitate and logistically manage. As the idea of fans being rewarded or having a stake in the team could create longer lasting and more dedicated fan-bases.

This post is complied from and email I sent to members of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds soccer organization about their desire to play in the MLS.

Riverhounds president said: "We are committed to becoming the fourth major franchise in the city and we will. You can count on that because we have a good plan in place and we're on our way." If he is talking major as in Major League Soccer, well then I believe he made a statement that he absolutely can't make good on.

1st off the MLS already has teams in Toronto, Columbus, Washington, and Philly looks like they will have a team shortly, which makes sense given the size of their media market. I see the league maxing out at 20 teams, maybe 22 years down the line. Given the geography, market size, and current team locations, Pittsburgh will be left out. Secondly it's highly unlikely the MLS adopting a similar system to those in Europe of promoting teams. Given the structure of the MLS and high ranking people/organizations, this chance is less than 1%.

A knowledgeable soccer fan will see this is clearly not going to happen.

Currently the only way I see this happening is by overwhelming the MLS with support for a Pittsburgh team, to the point were they will ignore the locations of other teams, to place a team in Pittsburgh.

So then the question now becomes how to create overwhelming support for a MLS team Pittsburgh? I've concluded that regional support alone will not be enough, and national support is a must too.

Make Pittsburgh America's Soccer Team! Make it the people's team. Allow people from all over the country to buy a stake in the team. I would advise something similar to this plan, like a stock market but with out losing your majority ownership. In theory the Riverhounds would sell 100,000 "shares" for a $100 dollars each. One per person. Which would give you the following: one ticket to a home game each year for life, as long as you are in procession of the "share". Once the Riverhounds make the MLS you can sell your "share" back to the team for $500. I think a share "owner" should have access to certain things, such as minority say in votes, draft pick selection, promotions at the stadium, and other special benefits.

It's a very simple idea, but I know it has lots of logistics issues it's similar to this http://www.myfootballclub.co.uk/ in England. However it really depends on how you structure it.

Instantly you would have Pittsburgh Riverhounds "Evangelists/Shareholders/Fans" all around the country.

First off, let’s say a 100,000 "shares" would raise you $10million for $100 each. Plus you would get unheard of national media attention as well.

The one ticket a season for life would be a great thing, plus no one would come alone, and it would increase ticket sales / attendance.

By giving people the option to redeem their "shares" they would have a great incentive to help the team reach the MLS. Not everyone would redeem their shares, because people would want to have access to the tickets and privileges.

You dramatically increase your fan bases, get tons of media attention and now you would have 100,000 Pittsburgh Riverhound activists supporting the team. I think it's just a matter of time before some US sports organization does something like this, but I can't think of better situation that with the Riverhounds.

And you might want to think of a name change. Well anyway, that's the just of it, and seems feasible, and I believe it gives Pittsburgh the best chance to have an MLS team.

Philly to get MLS Soccer Team $150m from Rendell

Ed Rendell is ready to give $150m to Philadelphia for a Stadium and MLS franchise.

The Philadelphia area is looking to add an expansion MLS team in 2009. The Chester waterfront seems like an likely position for the PA taxpayer financed stadium.

I believe Philadelphia makes perfect sense for the MLS. It's almost a done deal that they will receive one of the two new MLS teams starting in 2009. If a team moves into Philly, it would end Pittsburgh's chance to ever have a top level soccer team. With teams in Columbus, Toronto, Philly, & DC, there will be no chance for Pittsburgh to pick up a franchise. If I could own one type of sports franchise I would without hesitation choose an MLS team. Once you're in the MLS, you're not dropping down to a lower division as in soccer-mad foreign countries. The league is structured in such a way teams are on pace to cash in big time, and soccer's gaining US popularity doesn't hurt either. In a decade from now I would except an MLS franchise to fetch $200-300 million, easy.

Also were to can I apply for a $37m wiffleball stadium to built in Western Pennsylvania. With the Governor giving away all this taxpayer money, $37m for a wiffleball stadium seems like bargain.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds moving to Pittsburgh Mills

The Pittsburgh RiverHounds Soccer Team could find a home at the Pittsburgh Mills.

In what could be a sensational story for the AK Valley, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds could take up residence at the Pittsburgh Mills Complex. In case you didn't know the Riverhounds didn't field a team this year. In years prior they played at Falconi Field in Washington PA, while being owned by the Wild Thing's ownership group. The Riverhounds originally started in USL-1 Division Soccer playing their home games at various high school stadiums. However the team was just purchased by a Greetree group and are looking to relocate for next season, with the Mills complex a very likley option.

The Pittsburgh Mills makes perfect sense, it actually is better than perfect, and could be the most intelligent move a Pittsburgh sports team has made in recent decades.

Here is why this deal probably will happen and some of the reasoning behind their plans.

- The Mills has more than enough open space adjacent to Dick's Sporting Goods.
- The rumors are, Dick's could foot the bill for a $1-2million facility on the vacant property, the company just built $25m+ soccer stadium in Denver.
- The infrastructure and parking are already in place.
- Hotels & Restruntants are right there.
- The Riverhounds need exposure, and with a stadium at Pittsburgh's largest shopping center, they won't be "Out of Sight Out of Mind"
- The Fox Chapel is a very big soccer hotbed, many people don't remember but in the 1950s Harmerville was home to Hamerville S.C. the top soccer team in the country.
- Cranberry / Monroville / Greensburg are a short drive on turnpike.
- Downtown Pittsburgh is just down 28
- The Stores at the Mills will be more than happy for the extra visitors especially in the summer months.
- The WPIAL would host soccer playoffs games there, as well as other soccer tournaments could be staged there.

This deal just makes so much sense, soccer in American along with MLS is growing, and should continue to grow in the future. The Riverhounds will probably bounce between different locations next season till their new venue is ready. TV ratings are up for soccer and continue to trend upward. Pittsburgh is the 22nd largest media market in the US, the Riverhounds will start back up in USL 2nd Division, which is the third largest league behind the MLS and 1st Division. After completing the stadium & facilities, the Riverhounds will likely move up to 1st Division. It's unlikely in the Pittsburgh will ever have an MLS team, I see the league expanding to 20-24 teams, but you never know. At the rate things are going with the League, within 5 years, I would expect many American cities to value an MLS franchise over a NHL franchise. That will probably never be the case in Pittsburgh, but you never know.

This currently is all in the planing stages, but if things fall into to place, this would be a significant event for the AK Valley & Western PA.
